ABOUT TUZER BALLET
Tuzer Ballet is a non-profit, publicly supported organization created to advance the study, performance, and enjoyment of classical ballet in the Metroplex. The art of dance gives structure, instills discipline, and rewards with a gratifying sense of accomplishment. The company strives to preserve the beauty of dance, to serve the community by improving its quality of life, and to advance the art form.
Founded in 1984 by Artistic Directors Tanju and Patricia Tuzer, the Tuzer Ballet Company has evolved into a well-respected regional company that is praised for its broad repertoire, dancers of uncommon range and skill for their ages, and a vision of the highest excellence. The strong classical base instilled by the Tuzers enables the dancers to dance a multitude of styles and vocabularies by a range of choreographers. Among those invited to create works for the company have been Paul Mejia, Bruce Wood, Mary Ann Wall, and Benjamin Johnson.
Tuzer’s dancers are serious, devoted students who spend 18 – 20 hours weekly in classes and rehearsals, preparing for performances and possible professional careers. Many of the dancers in the company have won national recognition in the form of invitations and scholarships to major dance companies throughout the United States and Canada. Former students have gone on to establish professional dance careers with nationally and internationally recognized companies.
This is the forty first season of the company’s production of The Nutcracker. Tuzer Ballet has received praise for its purity and verve. The Dallas Morning News dance writer Margaret Putnam summarized the Tuzer Nutcracker succinctly: “…lavish, daring production” and “This student company is nothing but marvelous, even if the average age is 15. The production succeeds by leaps and bounds and is unfailingly wonderful.”
As a non-profit organization, the Tuzer Ballet Company is sustained entirely through grants, corporate and individual donations, fundraising events, and volunteer assistance. Since 1998 the company has distributed “Nutcracker” tickets at no charge to worthy organizations serving the needy. As a result, thousands who would not have otherwise had the opportunity to enjoy this classic holiday treasure have had their lives brightened by the magic of dance.
The company, under the direction of the Tuzers, is managed by a dedicated Board of directors.
